Starlite Learning (“Starlite,” “we,” “us”) makes a homeschool learning app for children in grades 3–5. Parents create every account, and children use a student login their parent sets up for them. This policy explains what information we collect on starlitelearning.com and in the Starlite app on the web, iOS, and Android, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Because Starlite is built for children under 13, we follow the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Section 5 explains how that works.
1. Information we collect
On our website
- Waitlist. Your email address and, if you share it, your first name.
- Website analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how people use our website: pages viewed, buttons clicked, your general location (city or region), and your device and browser type. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect this. We do not use Google Analytics inside the Starlite app.
From parents
- Account details. Your name, email address, password, and the US state you homeschool in. Passwords are stored securely by our sign-in provider.
- Your choices in the app. The classes, curriculum, and course topics you pick, and the school days and dates you schedule.
- Billing. Payments are processed by Stripe. We receive your plan and billing status. We never receive or store your card number.
About children
- Profile. The first and last name, grade, and interests a parent enters, plus the student username and password created for the child.
- Learning activity. The child’s chat messages with Starlo, their answers, quiz and activity scores, and lesson progress.
- Voice. If the child uses the microphone, the recording is sent to our transcription provider, turned into text, and used as their message. We delete the recording from our servers as soon as it is transcribed.
- Safety alerts. If a child’s message suggests they may be hurt, unsafe, bullied, or sharing personal information, the app saves that message with a short summary and shows it to their parent.
We do not ask children for their email address, phone number, home address, photos, or location, and children cannot create an account on their own.
2. How we use information
- To run Starlite: teaching lessons, theming practice around the child’s interests, and pacing the curriculum across your schedule.
- To generate Starlo’s replies and lesson activities (see section 3).
- To show parents their child’s progress, scores, and portfolio reports.
- To alert parents to safety concerns.
- To send account emails, like welcome messages and password resets, and, if you joined the waitlist, updates about Starlite. Every waitlist email has an unsubscribe link.
- To process payments, keep Starlite secure, prevent misuse, and meet legal obligations.
- To understand how people use our website and improve it.
We do not sell personal information. We do not show ads in the Starlite app, and we never use children’s information for advertising or to build marketing profiles.
3. AI and children’s information
Starlo is powered by AI models from OpenAI. To write a reply or build an activity, we send OpenAI the child’s messages and the lesson details it needs, such as grade, lesson topic, interests, and the child’s first name. Our own math engine writes and checks math problems and grades answers. Under OpenAI’s terms for business customers, the information we send is not used to train OpenAI’s models.
4. Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers that help us run Starlite, and only what each one needs to do its job:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, database, and file storage.
- OpenAI: Starlo’s replies, lesson activities and images, and voice transcription.
- Stripe: payments.
- Resend: account emails.
- EmailOctopus: waitlist emails.
- Google Analytics: website analytics (website only).
- Our hosting providers: the servers that run our website and app.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of a child or others. If Starlite is ever merged or sold, we will notify parents before their information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
5. Children’s privacy
Starlite is for children under 13, and we take that seriously.
- Parents are in charge. Only a parent or legal guardian can create a student. When you add a student, you give consent for us to collect and use your child’s information as this policy describes.
- We collect only what lessons need. A child never has to share more information to keep using Starlite.
- You can review it. You can see your child’s progress, scores, and safety alerts in your parent account, and you can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about your child.
- You can delete it. You can remove a student in the app or ask us to delete your child’s information. You can also tell us to stop collecting it, which ends your child’s use of Starlite.
To make any of these requests, email us at [contact email]. If you believe a child is using Starlite without a parent’s consent, please contact us and we will delete the account.
6. How long we keep information
We keep account and learning information while the account is active. When you delete a student or your account, or ask us to, we delete the related personal information within 30 days, except records we must keep by law, such as billing records. We keep waitlist information until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove it.
7. How we protect information
All information travels over encrypted connections. Access to it is limited to the people and providers who need it to run Starlite. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect your family’s information, and we will notify you if a breach affects it.
8. Your choices and rights
- Emails. Unsubscribe from waitlist and product emails with the link in any email. We still send emails you need for your account, such as password resets.
- Analytics. You can block cookies in your browser or install Google’s Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Access, correction, and deletion. Parents can update most information in the app. For anything else, email us. Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights under state law, and we honor these requests for every family, wherever they live.
9. Changes to this policy
We’ll post any changes on this page and update the date at the top. If we make a significant change to how we handle children’s information, we will notify parents first and ask for consent where the law requires it.
